Kyphoplasty
A kyphoplasty is a treatment used to relieve pain associated with compression fractures of the vertebrae. It is a minimally-invasive, outpatient procedure used to protect against further collapse or compression of a vertebral level. Performed by one of Innovative Pain & Spine Specialists pain medicine physicians, the patient is taken to the x-ray suite and consciously sedated. A needle and balloon are inserted into the fractured vertebra through a small incision. The balloon is then inflated, creating a void or cavity. The balloon is then removed and the void is filled with specially formulated bone cement to stabilize the fracture. The cement hardens and forms an internal cast to stabilize the vertebrae. The procedure can take 30-60 minutes, and after about one hour of observation, the patient is dismissed to home with a driver.
