Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD)
The MILD procedure is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients experiencing spinal stenosis, a common cause of back pain. Spinal stenosis causes back and leg pain while walking, with symptoms that improve or resolve while sitting down. Spinal stenosis is pressure on the spinal cord or nerves often caused by normal wear and tear changes in the spine. Many patients describe the feeling as a “shopping cart sign.” They can tolerate walking throughout the grocery store with assistance from leaning forward on a shopping cart. The MILD outpatient procedure is performed through a small incision about the size of baby aspirin, typically taking only 30-60 minutes. The goal is to open the spinal canal space by removing some of the excess ligament surrounding the canal. The pain medicine physicians at Innovative Pain and Spine Specialists in Omaha and Lincoln will help determine if the MILD procedure is right for you.
