What is a Pain Medicine Specialist?

A pain medicine specialist is a physician who has special training in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating all different types of pain. A pain medicine specialist has comprehensive knowledge of the physiology of pain, is able to assess complicated pain issues, understands which tests are used for diagnosing painful conditions, prescribes medications to pain problems appropriately, and has technical training to perform interventional procedures to treat pain, and uses this knowledge safely and effectively to help patients find relief from pain.

Additionally, the pain medicine specialist coordinates a multidisciplinary care team, such as physical therapy, psychological therapy, and physical rehabilitation, to offer patients a comprehensive plan in the treatment of their pain.

How Do I Know if I Need a Pain Medicine Specialist?

Acute pain typically improves over time. Chronic pain can last months, and even years, and may require interventional treatments that a pain medicine specialist is trained to perform. An important consideration when looking for a physician who specializes in pain medicine is to find someone who has the training and experience to help you with your pain issue. You also want someone you feel comfortable with. Dr. Thomas Brooks has vast training in both anesthesiology and pain management. His training as an anesthesiologist allows him to offer interventional procedures such as nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation, trigger point injections, radiofrequency ablation, oral medications, and implantable devices (stimulators and pumps) to treat chronic pain. It was his experience as an anesthesiologist that led him to pursue a sub-specialty in pain medicine.

Dr. Thomas Brooks’ education and training is extensive. He completed his undergraduate at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He went on to earn his medical degree from Creighton University College of Medicine in Omaha, and he completed his residency program at St. Louis University Hospital in Missouri. Dr. Brooks is board certified in both Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. Prior to joining Innovative Pain & Spine Specialists, Dr. Brooks had provided pain medicine services at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, NE.

In addition to his practice as a pain medicine specialist, Dr. Thomas Brooks serves as Associate Professor for the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Brooks is Chief Executive Officer of the Nebraska Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. He is often called upon as an expert advisor in interventional pain medicine hearings throughout the Midwest.
